How to Enjoy Being a Leader

Leadership is both extremely rewarding but also has its stressful moments. It’s fun when things are going well, but it’s your responsibility to fix them when they’re not … and unfortunately that part isn’t always fun. Through the highs and lows, it’s important that you’re able to fully enjoy what you do, no matter what. Read on for our tips on how you can not only survive but thrive in a leadership role. Because being a leader should be a beautiful adventure!

Create a great culture.

Surrounding yourself with good people will change your life. In fact, 94% of entrepreneurs and 88% of job seekers say that a healthy culture at work is vital for success. If you want to fully enjoy what you do, you have to build a culture that’s enjoyable to be a part of … it’s as simple, and as complicated, as that. Here are some tips for building a great environment for everyone involved:

  • Find the right people (great tips on hiring good people here).
  • Ask for (and listen to) feedback.
  • Promote a respectful atmosphere.
  • Recognize those doing well.
  • Lead by example.
  • Have fun!

Being the boss is hard work when dealing with different people and varying personalities, so it’s important that you show everyone that you’re committed to creating an environment in which everyone is comfortable.

Remain authentic.

As a leader, you may feel pressure to be perfect—and rightfully so. With all eyes on you, it feels like one wrong move could cost you. But it’s important that you drop this mentality, because at the end of the day, the people you’re surrounded by just want to know that you’re human. You make mistakes, you correct yourself, and you try to get better for the future just like everyone else.

With authenticity comes the need for transparent communication. This means having open and honest dialogue with those around you that’s built on a solid foundation of trust.

Help others grow.

Being a leader is about nurturing potential and fostering confidence. There’s nothing more fulfilling than watching those around you reach their dreams. Guide your team to recognize their strengths, confront their weaknesses, and embrace growth opportunities builds not just better leaders, but a collaborative and joyful culture!

Pat yourself on the back.

Every now and then, it’s a good idea to stop for a moment and give yourself some credit. In a leadership position, it’s easy to put pressure on yourself and work yourself to a point where your job is no longer fun or enjoyable. Here are some of our favorite ways to pat yourself on the back:

  • Let yourself relax when you can.
  • Read books that make you feel empowered (this list of self development books is a great place to start!).
  • Learn to accept compliments.
  • Write down your accomplishments.

Remember you deserve some credit for the hard work you put in, and it’s okay to be proud of yourself!

Being a Leader is a Journey!

Being a leader is both a challenging journey and a rewarding adventure. While there are highs and lows, it’s crucial to find joy and fulfillment in what you do. By creating a positive work culture, remaining authentic, nurturing the growth of others, and taking time to acknowledge your own achievements, you can not only survive but thrive in a leadership role. Embrace the challenges, celebrate the victories, fight for your dreams, and remember to enjoy the beautiful adventure of leadership!
